Regional Meteorological Centre at Chennai was established in April 1945 to supervise and coordinate meteorological services in the southern region, which now covers the states of Tamilnadu, AndhraPradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Union territories of Pondicherry and Lakshadweep.
